Spatial SQL

Spatial SQL In-Person / Online

This workshop hosted by @maptimeDavis introduces participants to SQL queries for spatial data through working with a graphical user interface (GUI) with some examples of common analysis processes such as length and area calculations, handling projections, and performing spatial joins. Participants will also understand resources for continued learning.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to import spatial data into an sqlite database, write queries to answer questions about the data, understand the difference between attribute queries and geometry queries, and view spatial tables and views in QGIS.

Prerequisites

We recommend that attendees should have introductory experience with SQL queries, such as DataLab's "Introduction to SQL" workshop. This workshop will provide a brief reminder of basic SQL queries but will not provide detailed explanations of introductory concepts. Attendees should understand how to write a select statement, query a subset of columns, use basic functions like SUM(), use a WHERE clause, and perform a join between two non-spatial tables. Bring your laptop with the latest version of QGIS installed. No prior experience with QGIS is required.
